Go into all the world and proclaim the good news...! - Mark 16.15
The Sand Point UMC Missions Ministry Team is dedicated to serving our community and our world. Our working motto is "To reach out to people in need" - be they here in our own View Ridge neighborhood or across the globe.
Update, January 13, 2012 - Sand Point Community UMC to host a Mary’s Place Family Shelter
We’re making slow progress toward our first week long welcome of up to 14 mothers and children to our church, but progress we are making. We now have a date: March 27th to April 2nd. Between then and now, here’s what’s happening. On January 31st we will have a small training provided by staff of Mary’s Place of not to exceed four chairs persons. They will include transportation, food service and communion. Interested in one of these jobs? Contact the church office or Blair Paul. These folks will in turn provide training during February and March for the volunteers who will make it happen.
Here again is a summary of what we’ll be doing. We will pick up our guests every evening at about 5:00 and bring them to the church (Transportation). We will provide a meal for them and any of the volunteers present (Food Service). We will spend time with our guests that may include helping older children with homework, playing games with younger children and just helping single mothers being a parent (Communion). Lights out will be about 9:00. We will be using our three
Sunday School rooms downstairs for bedrooms. Bedding will be provided by Mary’s Place. Two Church members will spend the night each day. Lights on will be about 6:00 AM with a light breakfast about 6:30 and on the road by 7:00 back to Mary’s Place. Can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to this
opportunity for sharing. More, much more, to follow. -Blair Paul
Tent City Meal Preparations
Since 2008, Sand Point UMC has helped to feed over 3,600 meals to the homeless. Members of Sand Point UMC provide monthly meals to the residents of Tent City 3 in Seattle on the fourth Sunday of each month. By providing a meal once a month, the residents at TC3 have one less meal to worry about while they focus on obtaining a solid roof over their heads.
Special Offerings
Loose change in each Sunday's offering is given to missions, with a different project designated each month. We call it "Melodies of Compassion," since you can hear the change jingling in the offering plates.
University District Food Bank
The needs are up; donations are down. We are asking the congregation to bring a can of food a week per person to each worship service and each meeting attended.
Sand Point Housing
As part of a neighborhood interfaith coalition, we help stock and staff the Resource Room, providing free household items for families and individuals in transitional housing.
UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) Kits
There continues to be an urgent need for kits to send to places across the United States and world-wide. Lists and the address of the UMCOR Depot are available from the church office.
Jamaa Letu
This is the orphanage that our Pacific Northwest Conference raised funds to build in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Sand Point congregation supports the children through sponsorships, and has sent mission team members to assist in person. If you would like to sponsor one of the boys or girls, visit www.hopeforthechildrenofafrica.com
Our Missions Ministry Team continues to be an open group. New people are always welcome! Call the church office (206-523-3040) for more information.
